"Cannot Install Hardware ....

J

John F Kappler

This is Windows XP Pro with the latest updates...

When plugging in a USB device such as a mobile phone, satnav device,
or mobile 3g modem, and install panel comes up for "USB Mass Storage
Device"

This install then fails with:
Cannot Install Hardware.
An error occured during the installation of this device.
The Data is invalid.

In addition, there is a device shown in device manager which is listed
but not installed. Trying to use the Uninstall option for this device
locks the computer which has te be restarted by powering off and on
again.

I've searched MS Support and found article 810882. Followed through
this process to restore the driver.cab file but this has made no
difference.

Any help much appreciated - I'd really rather not have to rebuild the
whole system!

TIA,

JohnK

p.s. This is on an HP nc2400 laptop.

Have you checked the startup items in MSConfig? You may have a device
conflict. By unchecking items in MSConfig startup you may be able to fix
this problem. I have found that when you unplug USB devices with the power
on sometimes you create device errors. Does the mobile phone or other USB
device have associated installation software that can be reinstalled or
uninstalled?

I have exactly the same problem with a wireless mouse, a USB flash drive,
anything that plugs into a USB port. Were you ever able to work around this,
or find a solution?
Thanks,
Hank
