Modem does not work ( 2nd post)

First let me thank all who replied to my first post!
I tried all the suggestions I received except getting a new modem before I
do that I figured I would put up the question one more time with the
additional information.
After the XP service pack 2 download killed my system by constantly
rebboting I reloaded Windows XP it seems everything works exceptmy modem. I
have tried reinstalling it several times. It is a US Robotics V92 PCI
faxmodem model 5660. When I go to install the system sees the modem as new
hardware installs it but when I go to use it nothing not even a dial tone.
When I go to my modem settings it shows as installed and working properly but
when I go in and try to communicate with it through the modem query I get the
following message.

MODEM FAILED TO RESPOND. MAKE SURE IT IS PROPERLY CONNECTED AND TURNED ON.
IF IT IS AN INTERNAL MODEM OR IS CONNECTED, VERIFY THAT THE INTERRUPT FOR THE
PORT IS PROPERLY SET.

How do I verify these settings and what are they supposed to be?

Of course you don't say what it was you've already tried. Have you tried
putting the modem in a different slot?

When reinstalling the modem , I tried moving it to every available empty
slot on my board. Making sure it is in tightly and secure before
reinstalling, and as I said in my original post it installs but it does not
respond when queried. I have tried all the websites posted on my original
post. I also did a scan for viruses.

I have the exact modem as you have ,and had the same problems,
but somehow, and that is the kicker,I got it to work, but can't remember how I
did it.
So please try again before you buy a new one,one thing I remember it says
com3 ,and I had to config a bunch of stuff,re-installed several times too,
specially after SP2...Not much help I know, but work with it...

Did you follow the modem's instructions for un-installing and
re-installing the modem software? PCI modems can be a real pain.

If you do determine that the modem should be replaced I suggest getting
an external modem instead, preferably standard serial inteface, not USB.
Much less to go wrong, very reliable and only cost a little bit more
than a PCI modem.
