Modem does not work

After loading SP2 my system kept restarting, so I reloaded my XP Home edition
and the system comes up and I have my files. The problem is I can not gert my
modem to work, I have a dial tone on the line. The system reconizes the
modem, installs it but says the modem is either busy or not hooked up
properly when I try to connect to my ISP. How do I correct this I don't
believe it will work with just purchasing a new modem. Thanks in advance for
any help I get.

I went through three cheap internal modems. None worked. I bought a Creative
External USB modem and it works wonderfully.

Two things - First Open the Phone & Modem Applet in Control Panel
then run the modem self test. Also, you may have had a driver updated
without your knowledge. Open Device Manager, modem and chose the
Rollback option for the driver in the details box.
I haven't used a modem in a long time, but believe the self-test is found
on a Diagnostics Tab or through a option called "Query Modem".
