Mobile Broadband / Ethernet clash

John S

I am running Windows XP SP2, with IE7 on a desktop, which is connected to a
wireless hub via ethernet cable. There is no landline broadband connection to
the hub. I have a Vodafone Mobile Broadband USB dongle, to connect to the
Internet. This works fine if I disconnect the ethernet cable, but if I
reconnect the ethernet cable, the system tries to use as a preference a
non-existent land line broadband via the ethernet hub. It appears that I need
to set the mobile broadband dongle as the first choice for internet
connection, but cannot find out how to do so. Is there some Network property
I need to set?

You may want to setup Bindings order. This search result may help too.

Thanks for your swift response, but unfortunately, I am lost here, as I am
totaly non-technical, when it come to windows. Is VPN involved? Do I need to
be comcerned with TCP/IP, and if so, how do I check it, and make any changes?

Incidentally, I have also found that the same applies with my Vista laptop,
connecting to the Newtork wirelessly. If the Wireless is disconnected, I can
access the Internet via the Mobile Broadband, if the wireless LAN is active,
I cannot access the Internet.

Are you(or is anyone), able to tell me (hopefully in words of one syllable -
an idiot's guide), what I need to check, and possibly change?

Thanks again for your interest. I feel that this is likely to ea problem
encountered by a growing number of people. I haver found queries on the web
referring to this, but no answers.

The setting for this is called the "Metric".

By default, a hardwire interface (default metric 20) is preferred
over a wireless one (default metric 25).

To change your metric:
o Open your Network Connections Control Panel.
o Right-click on one of your active connections and select "Properties"
o In the window, scroll down and double-click on the "Internet Protocol" item.
o In the pop-up window, click on the "Advanced" button
o At the bottom, locate and un-check the "Automatic Metric" checkbox
o In the Metric Box, enter a Metric number. Lower numbers are preferred
connections and are used before higher numbers. Put a number like "5" for
your preferred connection and "15" for a secondary connection.

Repeat for each of your active NICs.

HTH,
John

and solved my problem perfectly. Sorry for the delay in replying, but again,
many tanks.

Robert - again, thanks for your offer, but John has solved my problem, so no
further help is needed.
