MMC Causes Fatal Exception

Z

After installing a new MB with a AMD Athlon 64 3000+ CPU and 512MB of ram, I
have run into a problem when I try to us the MMC. When I open file
player, it works fine. However, when I open the TV/capture application the
screen turns blue and the following warning appears:

Fatal Exception 0E has occurred at 0028:00000009. The current Application
will be Terminated. Press any Key to Return to Windows.

After which no ATI application will open unless one reboot. Then if one
tries to use the TV/Capture application again the same warning appears. With
the same results.

I have tried every version of MMC from 7.0 to 7.7 and I have the last
driver that ATI issued for the AIW 128 and the Windows 98 OS. So I know
getting a newer version won't help.

But, what is the answer?

Does your M/B support Win98? I have a 2 year old Intel board that Win98SE is
the oldest supported O/S. Do you have the latest BIOS and chipset drivers
for the M/B? Do you see any red X or yellow ! in device manager? Are you
using at least DX8.1? Run DXDIAG.EXE to test the installation. Get MEMTEST86
free from Microsoft and check your memory. Preferably over night.

When in this situation:
After which no ATI application will open unless one reboot.
Go into Taskmanager and see if ATIMMC.exe is a running Process. If it is,
end it. this >>may<< allow you to continue w/o rebooting. Ignore the popup
warning.
Good Luck.

Does your M/B support Win98?

I beleive it does since no other application is acting up.
Do you have the latest BIOS and chipset drivers for the M/B?

Well, I assume so since the board was made in August of this year, But, I'll
look into it.

No, all clear.
Are you using at least DX8.1?

I am using DX9.0 - It came with the MB's install disk.
Run DXDIAG.EXE to test the installation

It also shows no video problems
Get MEMTEST86

My 512 mb memory is new and just out of the box. I can't beleive that= it
might be the problem
Go into Taskmanager and see if ATIMMC.exe is a running Process. If it is,
end it. this >>may<< allow you to continue w/o rebooting. Ignore the popup
warning.

I'll try it

Forget Taskmanager. Was thinking of W2K. I have a dual boot system the
Taskmanager in W98 doesn't even kill it properly when it's working ok.
New M/B are the most likely to need changes. Memory is the most likely to be
bad when new.

Run DXDIAG.EXE to test the installation -It al so shows no video problems

I may have been a little hasty with that.

This time I ran DXDIAG after I got the Fatal Exception 0E has occurred at
028:00000009 message.

And after it got half way into the test, the same fatal message appeared.

Then when I again ran DXDIAG I was given the option of stopping DXDIAG
because it detected a problem with DirectShow.

Could a problem with DirectShow (what ever it is) cause a problem with MMC?

And, if I remember, does not DirectShow have someting to do with MMC?

Don't know that DX crashing after you've already had a Fatal Exception means
anything but it couldn't hurt to reinstall DX. Especially if you don't
already have 9c. AFAIK DirectShow is part of DX and MMC uses it. I'd
uninstall MMC before doing DX.

Forgot to check my DX version the other day. I have DX8.1 on my W98 install.
That jogged my memory that I had tried DX9.0 &/or 90b but had problems.
Don't remember them being what you describe, but it's possible, any way it
wasn't tolerable. I've used the card in this system with W2K and my P4
system with DX9.0x but with W2k and possibly ME, so it's not just DX and the
AIW.
Maybe someone could post as to whether or not W98, DX9x and MMC7.x is a
working combination with an AIW128.

Maybe DirectX 9.0 IS the problem?

I did not have this problem before I loaded DirectX 9.0 when I istalled my
new Motherboard.

Maybe I should go back to DirectX 8.0?

I'll give it a try.

And if it don't work, it not like I have anything better to do then sit in
from of the computer and watch it reboot :)

IIRC DX8.0 required an additional package. 8.0a or something like that for
capture. 8.1 put them together.
I think just going to 98SE, or newer, would rectify your problem. The
stability of W2K/XP make them desirable and NTSF breaking the 4gb file size
limit is a plus.
Good Luck.

Why should I give Bill Gates more money! Especially since I had no problem
before upgrading -which is not what all computer makers what us saps to do?
8.1 put them together

I tied Dx8.1 - The fatal exception returned when using DxDia

I am going back to Dx8.0 until somone can give me an real world answer.
