win2k error - mmc tv application hangs

Hi all-

I'm getting a repeated error when using mmc TV 7.7. Event log shows
the following:

Application popup: ATIMMC.EXE - Application Error : The instruction at
"0x77fc8fe1" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not
be "written".

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

Any programmers or developers out there know what this could mean? I
have a limited understanding of programming and how memory is accessed
and all that, but I certainly don't know enough to debug any code.
Here are some system details:

Windows 2000 SP3 (occurred with SP2 as well)
ATI Rage 128 Pro AIW 32MB using 5.13.1.3279 driver
MMC 7.6; DVD and TV upgraded to 7.7 with patch
AMD 1.2GHz T-bird
512MB RAM
WD 120GB HD; plenty of free space

Only the TV app causes this error. I'm using the 7.7 mmc instead of
ATI's recommended 7.2 because 7.7 gives better TV capture. I am still
waiting to resolve a problem that I emailed to ATI about 7.2 back in
November 2001, so I have basically written off their tech support (a
phone call to ATI asking why I could not capture sound resulted in the
not so salient response "is your audio cable plugged in" after I told
them that I could hear sound but not capture it; I solved the problem
by using a different driver after reinstalling 2k).

Any help or leads would be appreciated.

Thanks

Got it. Can't upgrade to mmc 8.5 with the rage card (tried and failed
by the way). I ended up on Microsoft Update and downloaded a
mysterious 124kb file that had no details with it other than being a
recommended driver update for ATI. After that, mmc 7.6 worked fine.

Sidebar: Previously I would use mmc but after some time I would get
the crashes mentioned in my previous post. This could be resolved by
logging off and logging back onto the system (even though I am the
only user). Then the problem would crop up again after I had been
online for awhile, usually after watching a movie in wmp or some other
player or playing a full screen game. I'm curious to see if the same
thing happens this time.
