MMC 9.0 "upgrade"

A

Alan Olson

Has anyone been able to install MMC 9.0 over 8.x? Or even install 9.0 after
uninstalling 8.x? If so, i'd love to hear from you.

neither 8.9 nor 9.0 would install for me over 8.8, or after i uninstall 8.8.

The setup program will load/initialize and then simply disappear on me
without any error.

Help.

Obviously, after using CAT-uninstaller, you'll have to re-install all ATI
software, including drivers, DVD decoder, WDM driver, Guide+, everything.

It will give you a clean slate to start with.

A

Alan Olson

Why is a step like this necessary? Normally uninstalls and/or upgrades take
care of all this for you?

OK,

I uninstalled 8.8.

I ran the catuninstaller.

i rebooted.

I reinstalled the WDM.

I rebooted.

XP found all the "new" hardware.

I launched the 9.0 install.

same thing happened. it extracted the files, it initialized the installer.
The installer disappeared AGAIN without any error.

Find the folder ATI\support\ and the mmc folder there. Try running
setup.exe to see if it will install that way. Do you have more than one WDM
installed? If so, uninstall that and reinstall the ATI WDM. Reboot and
cancel any "new hardware found" installation and do it manually.

Alan Olson

Running it from that directory does the same exact thing.

From the control panel/Administrative/Device manager - there is only one WDM
installed.

How do i uninstall the WDM?

I had the same problem. Be sure you do not use the wdm that is on the ati
install cd. catalyst 4.4 will not work with it...

here is my install...

A real mess if not done xxxxx

remove control panel
do not select reboot
remove drivers
select reboot

windows media encoder 9 must be installed
dat jet database must be installed
dirext x 9 must be installed

the files:

mmc-8-1-0-0dao-mdac.exe
It will install 3 or four times, only 1 needs to be there/ add remove
programs.

mmc-9-0-0-0.exe multimedia center 9.0
It req tv-capture-wdm-6-14-10-6227.exe
Install before multimedia center

You will see these items present, device manger/system:

acti wdm rage theather audio
ati wdm rage theater video
ati wdm specialized mvd codec
ati wdm specialized pcd codec
ati wdm tv audio cross bar
ati wdm tv tuner

display drivers:
xcp-mce-8-00-040322a-014266c.exe

these are catalysts 4.4

All is working fine with my ati 9600 pro and my aiw 9600, captures are
great, and the new option to encode to divx.

my 2 cents

In my case, the usual uninstall-install of newer versions has worked for the
last 12 months.

The CAT-uninstaller must do a better job of removing ATI software. That's
why ATI wrote it (I assume).

I emailed ATI's customer care center and got a canned answer back, which was
of no help. I called ATI Customer Service today and the support rep said
this was a known issue and told me to drop back to 8.8 and there is no ETA
on 9.1. If you ask me, that is pathetic. There wasn't the slightest effort
to try and work on the problem. I did some digging on InstallShield's
website and goto a couple of additional parameters to include in the setup
syntax to hopefully figure out where it is bailing on me. Here is results
of...
C:\ATI\support\mmc-9-0-0-0>Setup.exe
/Verbose"C:\ATI\support\mmc-9-0-0-0\package.log"

If anyone can decipher this, then perhaps you can share your thoughts.

Hi John -

I got a useless canned answer back from ati too, and i agree it is pathetic
that this hasn't been resovled over teh course of two releases.

That setup output really doesn't tell you much, except that it issued an
abort message, and tehn shut down.

I just saw this thread, what is supposed to be the problem with MMC 9.0?
Using here with no problems, I had the latest Omega drivers and the 3 files
they link to on their site. I didn't uninstall anything just installed MMC
9.0 and
as far as I can tell all is fine. I should say all is better because the
picture coming
in the svideo looks better now.

P

pjp

Looks to me like you've got the RPC service disabled?

Or maybe you've not patched it yet to stop Blaster (although this would mean
your pc would want to reboot approx. every min.)?

A

Alan Olson

No, this isn't correct either. I have hte RPC service running and it still
fails to install.

D

David B.

On allot of machines, when you get to the point of installing MMC (version 8.9 and 9.0) it will just quit during the Windows
installer portion of setup. Don't bother trying to find a fix as there isn't one. My system developed this problem after upgrading
the motherboard and processor, was working fine before that, no it's not a bad motherboard or processor, or any other part for that
matter, it's a problem with the ATI installer, 8.8 installs and works as it should.
