Missining ntoskrnl.exe

My pc will not boot up. It keeps telling me I am missing
or that the file is corrupt. The file is as follows:
<windows root>system 32\ntoskrnl.exe

I am running windows XP pro and I am knida pc stupid.
Could anyone help me out with how to re-install this file
without out reformating??? I am trying not to loose some
files on the computer. I can't seem to find anything on
the micorsoft site that would help me.
