Missing WindowsInstaller-KB893803-x86.exe

Tom

Recently my Windows 2000 failed:
*** STOP: 0x00000077 (0xC0000,0xC0000185,0x00000000,0x0027E000)
KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR

This was followed by:
STOP: C0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The Registry cannot load the Hive (File)

I was forced to reinstall and as usual I updated to SP2, SP3 and SP4. Everything
seemed to be okay. However when I tried to install the first application
the system reported file "WindowsInstaller-KB893803-x86.exe" missing. This
is the first time in years and lots of computers that I have a missing "Windows
Installer 3.1 Redistributable". Since my disks seems to be okay I suspect
that my MOBO is defective. Am I okay? What do you think?

Your disk drive is probably NOT ok. That error indicates that your hard
drive is probably failing.

By the way, you don't need to install SP2 or SP3. SP4 is all you need.

Windows Installer 3.1 is later then SP4 so it needs to be installed
separately, but any application which requires it should offer to install it
for you.

Tom,

One thing I noticed, you don't need to install all SP's in order.
Installing SP4 is sufficient, and then installing the SP4 rollup.

I've had some problems caused by the rollup...

Thanks Gary and dc for your responses. This time it was the MOBO, now it
refuses to boot normally. After 5 years (or 6?) the MB failed for good.
Besides I suspect that HD C: is failing too, so it's time to buy a new computer.

Don't be too quick to condemn the motherboard. A failing hard drive can
prevent the board from booting.

I've had some problems caused by the rollup...

Was it something like having Windows demand some particular update,
then say it couldn't be installed, then demand it again, etc.,
in an infinite loop?

That's what once happened to me after a Win2K "repair"+SP4+Rollup

No, it caused problems for me with Internet Explorer and for older MSDN
help files.
