Windows Installer does nor work

Gerard

My OS is Windows XP Pro

When downloading Norton Antivirus 2008 software, norton setup attempted to
update the microsoft windows installer, giving the following error;

"Setup Requirements Check
Setup was unable to update the MSI component. Please visit the link below
for more information
http://www.symantec.com/msi3"

This link gives you instructions for reinstalling the windows installer using
WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe but you first have to rename the MSI
files
cd \windows\system32
ren msi.dll msi.old
ren msihnd.dll msihnd.old
ren msiexec.exe msiexec.old
exit

I renamed the files and ran the WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe and got
the error message,
"KB893803v2 Setup Error
Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the
Cryptographic service is running on this computer."

In the system folder, I now have msi files,
msi.dll = 0
msi.old = 2,840,400
msiexec.exe = 0
msiexec.old = 78,848
msihnd.old = 271,360
There is no msihnd.dll file (the original file that was renamed to
"old")

I then attempted to remove the norton software using norton's removal tool
and got the error message "This application requires microsoft installer
(MSI) version 1.1 or greater."

Also attempted to remove the software using the Control panel add/remove
programs; didn't work and now I have lost the add/remove programs icon.

I have also attempted to run msicuu2.exe cleanup file but that did not work.

Every time I start the PC or open an application I get a list of error pop
ups related to msi corrupt windows image

Any suggestions on what I can try next (without re-installing windows)
Thank you

That's just the tip of the iceberg. Wait until you get Norton installed!

I don't think anyone here would recommend that product.
