Steve - THANKS!

I've been supporting MS prods for over 15 years (either
personally or professionally), but I haven't had the need
to R-n-R TCP/IP in XP yet - just had a case today where
that was the answer -- after more than an hour of otherwise
fruitless troubleshooting (by remote, over the phone, with
salesman/user) - suspecting his DHCP functions from his
router, his DSL service, and malware (which has been an
issue in the recent past), I told the user that my next
step on any other OS was to remove/reinstall TCP/IP - but I
couldn't see how to do that in XP - your pointer to the MS
page for Winsock2 was perfect - we walked through the
routine, and all was well.

The MS page mentions that if the NAME entries appear as
anything OTHER than what they show, then you've got a
problem - I'm glad they said that, because his entries were
VERY close - but the removal/reinstall fixed it all up.

Later we'll fight the malware issues - we were actually
trying to get the the internet from his machine to retrieve
Ad-Aware or HiJack s/w. We can now. but he ran out of
time GRRRR

Again, Thanks!
Nate
