missing taskbar and start menu

When I start up my computer, the taskbar and start menu are missing. I also
get error messages saying that certain programs cannot run do to low memory
(which should not be the case) and certain websites (especially ones that use
Java) do not load. Any ideas what the problem could be?

No, CTRL + ESC doesn't work... they also don't appear in safe mode, and doing
a clean boot didn't seem to work either. Think I have to do an in-place
repair?

regarding the "low memory," do you have a low limit on your Paging File?
Start / Control Panel / System / Advanced tab
Under Performance, click Settings
Advanced tab

I have the same problem. I have tried F8 at start up, going to Safe Mode
plus Command Prompt, then typed %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
which is supposed to allow a System Restore, but I then got an error message
stating "System Restore is not able to protect your computer. Please
restart your computer, and then run System Restore again" Without a start
button to get into Control Panel how do I do it???

W

This will get you to the Run box and into the Control Panel...

Open Task Manager...

Ctrl + Shift + Esc | File | New Task (Run...) |
Type:
control
in the Run box and click OK.

Try reinstalling System Restore:

With all hidden files set to be shown (from the Folder Options applet),
navigate to the C:\Windows\Inf folder and right-click sr.inf. Then
choose "Install". If your Windows installation isn't on the C: drive,
substitute the correct drive letter.

Problems with System Restore can be caused by malware, so make sure your
computer is 100% clean. If you need help in doing that, post back.

Hi Malke, I am late in replying, as my second computer that the problem is
on refused to fully start! I have now got as far as C:\WINDOWS\Inf folder,
but inside is an sr file (looks like a notepad with one yellow cog) but no
sr.inf. There are also sr.PNF srchasst srusbusd srusbusd.PNF
I right clicked on sr, then on Install.
Got error message
FILES NEEDED
The file "sr.sys" on WINDOWS XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 CD is needed.

Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK.

Copy files from

C:\WINDOWS\Inf\i386

I have a Microsoft Windows Security Update CD February 2004, I have inseted
this but cannot find an sr file. Help!

I would also welcome some instruction on cleaning computer 100%. I have

1. You need to enable the ability to see all hidden files and
extensions, like I told you. From Folder Options>View tab uncheck the
boxes next to the 3 places where files and extensions are hidden. Apply
and OK out.

2. The message you are receiving is not asking for the Service Pack 2
cd; it is asking for your Windows XP operating system cd. Put that disk
in your drive and point it to i386. If you don't have an actual
operating system disk, you should have an i386 folder in C:\Windows
(assuming your Windows installation is on the C: drive - if not,
substitute the correct letter).

Hi Malke, I have now "Unhidden" all files found sr.inf, used my Windows CD
to install i386, but all files were already there, and of a more recent date,
so I answered NO to each query!

I already had AdAware SE loaded, so ran a scan that found 112 Critical
Objects.
Win32.dialer.Sarister 109, and Coulomb dialer 3, all TAC 7, so have
quarantined all.

I downloaded Spybot onto this computer, ran it, downloaded updates, and did
a check. All OK. I than copied Spybot to a CD, loaded onto second
computer, but cannot connect to the Internet! Both computers are side by
side, and connect independant of each other to the same broadband modem using
a Linksys router, NOT wireless. Therefore have not been able to check
second computer using Spybot. Still have no Start Button or Taskbar!

Some how you managed to send a shorcut when you tried to copy
XP_taskbar_desktop_fixall.vbs to a floppy.

Try copying XP_taskbar_desktop_fixall.vbs to your floppy again.

Right click XP_taskbar_desktop_fixall.vbs, point to Send To, and then click
3 1/2 Floppy (A).

Then double check that you copied the file and not a shortcut to the floppy.
