start menu missing

G

Guest

I first had a failure on my internet connection with charter cable.
Charter's automatic repair attempted a fix. Computer hung up.

After reboot start menu, icons, and taskbar are missing.

Tried a clean boot with no success.

This occurs on both log in accounts and in safe mode.

I have read posts that talk about Kelly's Korner, but I cannot get it to
load from the jump drive

I have since been able to load the
xp_taskbar_desktop_fixall from Kelly's Korner and this has not resolved the
problem.

Where can I find the .reg file?

I have also been able to try the nodesktop.reg from Kelly's Korner with no
success. Worth noting --- If I "End Process" on one of the svchost.exe
programs --usually the second from the bottom (3 are running) the icons
reappear without the taskbar or start menu. I then have between 0-3 minutes
before system failure--usually a NTAuthority/System failure.

Also note that every time the machine tries to shutdown I get an error on
explorer.exe and must end task. This still doesn't shut down the computer
and the computer must be unplugged and restarted.

have not tried any spyware checks....I do have McAffee, but occasionally it
turns off the virus scan and I must enable manually. My wife was using the
computer right before the problem occurred and I do not know if the virus
protection was enabled when she was on the internet.

Shortly thereafter the internet connection was lost and I could not restore.
Thats when I tried the Charter Cable Automatic Help which tried to load a
known previously good setup. It then hung up and I have not had a successful
boot again.

Could spyware be causing the lockup and how might I find it....

Run your anti virus software in safe mode ensuring that it is with current
definitions.

Spyware causes many problems. If not installed download and run Adaware
and / or update Reference file
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php

There will also be Error Reports in Event Viewer. Please post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

Can you access a Dos Prompt and type eventvwr.msc to access Event Viewer?

Do you have a Windows XP CD?

I went to the Regedit from the Run command and found that the Bar Size did
not exist in the folder below
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Explorer
Bars\{32683183-48a0-441b-a342-7c2a440a9478}]

"BarSize"=-

Does this need to be added? If so, how should it be added?

FWIW mine doesn't have a bar size. It only has a single
