Missing systray icons

I have some programs running in the background which normally put an icon
in the systray but these icons diappear after a time. Why does this happen,
is there any way to prevent it happening, and how do I gain access to them
once they have disappeared?

I do not have 'Hide inactive icons' on and when I do activate that I often
don't get the '<<' to see the hidden icons.

Win XP Pro.

Thanks for the link Jeffrey but Explorer is running OK. All desktop icons
are there and two icons in the systray, ZoneAlarm and my AV s/ware. Missing
is a Spampal and volume icon and no '<<' to unhide them (even thought 'hide
inactive icons is not ticked).
