Missing Sys Tray Icons

Hi

I have been finding that various sys tray icons that should be present are
going missing!
Sometimes re starting brings them back!
As an example the USB remove hardware safely icon has gone today!
Other times its my net meter (measured time on line) or it can be almost any
of the icons.
As far as I can tell the process is running as they can be found in processes.
But it is very annoying as I can't access the functions.

Can anyone offer help please?

Hi

Under start - settings - Taskbar and Start Menu - Taskbar tab have you got
"Hide inactive icons" ticked??

Hi

No I have set them to show all the time.
Its the random nature of this that worries me!
On each start up I can see a different set of icons, more or less sometime
they are all there I got to this point last night and did a restore point,
when the vanished again today I tried to restore from this but they were
still missing.
The one that seems to have gone and stayed gone the most is the safely
remove hardware icon and this is a real pain as I do use it often.
I sorted out a command line to make it run but I would much rather have the
icons.

Try disabling the SSDP Discovery Service and/or the Universal Plug and
Play Device Host service from Start | Run | Services.msc

Hi

The problem seems to go if I require myself to log on each start up.
However as its only me that uses the pc this is a pain.
Even more so as the computer finds a way to auto log on and then the problem
comes back!
How do I stop auto log on?

For someone who is MS MVP, that is very extreme.

Firstly you need to quote the message (or at least a part of it) to
which you refer. Secondly what is so extreme and why is that related to
MVP?

I have this problem on my laptop the work around I have for this is:

Download the file xp_pastitems.vbs from Kelly's site:
http://www.kellys-korner.com/
(Line 53: Remove Past Items From Notification Area)

Create a shortcut t the file and place it in your Quicklaunch toolbar, I
have renamed it "Refresh Systray"

Then when your icons fail to load, run the .vbs file and your systray
will be refreshed showing ALL the icons.

.... It works for me... acknowlegement goes to Kelly and Doug.
