missing icon in sys tray

My company has just given me a new desktop computer which runs XP
Professional SP1. When I print to any of the network computers to which I
have mapped the small printer icon doesn't show in the sys tray while the
document is printing. On my old computer which had WIN2K SP4 a small printer
icon appeared here. I do not have hide icons checked nor does an icon print
appear in the past or present icon list. What do I need to do to get this
functionality.

The icon shows only until the document has been fully transmitted to
the printer. If you are using a fast LAN and a printer with a lot of
storage capacity, that may not be very much time.

Hi Ron,

That is generally a function of the printer driver, and in WinXP most do not
do that, but rather only indicate the initial spooling in the windows of the
program doing the printing. Once spooled and sent, that 's it.

Thanks for the input on this issue. I wouldn't pursue it, if not for the
mention in the XP help documentation that when printing a printer icon should
show in the notification area.

Thanks,

Ron
