sys tray icons change properties

I have all the icons in my system tray designated "always show" or "always
hide." Frequently, however, several of the "always show" icons mysteriously
revert to "hide when inactive." Is there a limit to the number of icons the
sys tray can handle properly? Thanks for any advice.
