Missing space on 6 GB HD

I have two physical HDs on my pc, which runs XP Home, a 40 GB and a 6 GB, . Recently I deleted everything on my 6 GB HD and decided to put my virtual memory on it to improve performance. My problem is when I view the drive under various circumstances I get the following indications:

1. Virtual Memory Window: 1496 MB available.

2. Windows Explorer and properties for that drive: total 6.03 GB, 4.57 GB used, and 1.47 GB free. The pie chart also shows about 75% used.

3. Run cmd dir: 0 bytes used, 1,569,385,984 bytes free.

Obviously, I am concerned about why I have so little space available on an empty HD. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It is probably the virtual memory file. You cannot see it in Windows
Explorer unless you make it visible. There is nothing there to see anyway.

in windows explorer...enable viewing hidden files to see what is there...
if the only thing there is your page file
and there is still space not accounted for...
run chkdsk /f on that drive

I have a small form PC that XP had hibernation operational until I disabled it. Did you check this out?
How much space is missing? Also, my HDs for example a 38GB HD also has 8MB set asside by XP which it will not inclucde it in any partition. Also, it is advised by MS to keep at least a 2MB on your main drive. For example I have C: D: & E:. Both C: & D: have 2MB pagefile.sys but E: has 1550MB page file.

Is system restore monitoring the drive? You can disable (or enable) system
restore on a per drive basis in System Properties.

Forgive the dumb question, but, did you empty the trash? No, seriously... have you reformatted the drive? I imagine that point 1 is what you saw before you put the virtual memory on it, right? Numbers 2 & 3 are actually giving you the same results, but it seems that there are some hidden files, or the Recycler folder is huge... usually I manage to "empty" it by reformatting.

Thanks for your input. At the time I sent my message I did not have my
virtual memory on that HD. Following another suggestion to my question, I
deleted all the trash and I now have 5.98 GB free on my 6.03 HD. Happy
happy. Thanks very much.

Thanks for your suggestion. I checked and I was already viewing all hidden
files. I eventually discovered I had a large trash bin which I deleted.
Now I have 5.98 GB of free space and am very happy.

already. I have since discovered a large trash bin which I emptied. I now
have 5.98 GB free and am happy.

I don't really know why I did not see them before, but I went to Folder Options and removed the check mark for Hide System Files and when I looked I could see the trash bin for the first time. After emptying it I found 5.98 GB of free space. So, many thanks for your suggestion. I feel a little foolish.
