Just upgraded Dell Laptop from Windows ME to Windows XP home edition. Before the upgrade system information reported 256MB of ram, but afer upgrade this has fallen to 128MB- half. I do have 256MB physical memory, and previously this has never been a problem. Is there any way I can get windows to recognise this memory? Thanks

I saw something similar to this with one laptop. It had 256MB hardwired
internally. Up to 256MB could be added by the user. After an upgrade,
Windows wasn't showing 512MB in System Properties any longer. It was,
however, showing the correct amount in System Information> Hardware and
with programs such as AIDA32.

Normally when half the memory goes missing in System Properties, it's
because of bad or flakey RAM. But in this particular case it was okay for
that laptop to show two separate RAM readings. That laptop started life
with Win98. It was upgraded to 98SE and then WinME. Two years ago, it
underwent a clean install of XP Home. It's still in use, still shows the
funky RAM reading but it continues to work perfectly.

I guess what I'm saying is - dig a little deeper. You may not be seeing the
whole story for your laptop. If you suspect you have bad RAM there are
software testers that pick up most problems or you could bring it in to a
shop and have them run more intensive diagnostics on the RAM.

Go to www.crucial.com and run their memory test.
