Missing post, unable to enter safe mode...

I remember posting a question here last week. I did have one response and
replied. Since that time I've been deep into trouble shooting. I do remember
making a comment about a rather large corporation. I also remember listing a
Knowledge Base article...must have displeased the computer gods.

I do know I have a problem with a TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-H553A. XP Pro doesn't
recognize blank media. I have a pre-XP vintage CD RW drive that works great
with XP Pro. Last week (3/14) my OS crashed after installing Microsoft
updates. I was unable to enter "Last known good config" or any of the three
safe modes. I was able to run the Recovery Console. Executed chkdsk c: /r and
one issue was repaired. Still unable to enter safe mode. If I selected Last
known good config the system would hang. If I selected safe mode, the
computer would reboot to the same screen. Some times I could not enter the
Recovery Console. I had to disconnect the computer power cord plug from the
surge suppressor and wait for the capacitors to discharge. Then I could run
the Recovery Console and load XP Pro onto the new hard drive (intended for
BackUp purposes). A day late and a dollar short!

The really bad part is I had set Level 1 security as a Power User on My
Documents folder. From the stand point of disaster recovery...that's a very
bad idea.

I do believe the issue is linked to failure of the Optical drive but I can't
prove it at this point. Oh, I should mention I'm forcing the old log in
method.

Any one ever seen any thing like this before?

i would "UNPLUG" that
dvd device then attempt
to get a functional o.s.

i suggest to do an inplace
repair installation with
your windows cd "or" since
you really have nothing to
loose do a "clean" install.

but i would do an repair
install instead, download
your updates (if any), make
your backups and "MAKE SURE"
your o.s. runs "GREAT".

afterwards, tinker with
that dvd device if it is
still worth installing.

there is really no point
in trying to find a work
around or a fix
for this dvd device,
at this time
if the o.s. is corrupted
at this time....
