Missing or corrupt boot.ini

I am trying to boot my Windows XP Home edition and I get the following error message. The file boot.ini is either missing or corrupt. I can't boot into safe mode, last known good etc. Will not boot at all. Tried going to the recovery console and use the following commands: chkdsk and chkdsk /r. Rebooted machine and still get say error message. I have not tried the fixmbr or bootcfg commands, because I need to backup data first and then I might try these commands. I have not installed (soft/hardware) or upgraded anything on my computer in over a three weeks. Does anyone have any ideas? As the last resort I will reinsatll XP Home by formatting the hard drive. But this is only as a last resort.
