Missing/corrupt hal.dll

I've read the other topics on this issue, but they haven't helped.
Here's the case...

I go to start my computer and I recieve the message "Windows is unable
to start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <windows
root\system32\hal.dll> Please re-install..."

I've tried going to the recovery console and typing in the commands
"expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hal.dll" and "Attrib -H-R-
S c:\boot.ini." For the expand d command, I get a message saying
"access is denied" and for the attrib, I get "the file cannot be
opened."

WHAT IS GOING ON HERE? Keep in mind I'm trying to save my documents
and what-not; my last resort is re-installing XP completely..

By the way, I also tried doing bootcfg /list but it tells me "There
are currently no boot entries available to display."

Yep, tried that. It says "Error: .... This error may be caused by a
corrupt file system, which would prevent Bootcfg from successfully
scanning. ..." That was only part of the error message, but that's the
main point.

I'm at a complete loss. I have no idea of what to do.

Well, you can try booting with a floppy boot disk but if the file system
is damaged then that may be an exercise in futility, yet it only takes
about 1 minute to make a floppy boot disk so it won't hurt anything to
try it: http://www.nu2.nu/bootdisk/ntboot/

If that doesn't work the only other thing to try would be to run a
chkdsk on the drive (from the Recovery Console). Be warned that running
chkdsk always presents a risk of loosing files, if you have no backups
you might want to try to mount the disk in another Windows 2000/XP
computer or use a Bart's PE disk to see if you can access the disk.

I experienced the same thing last week with my system. I think the command
you want to use is "Extract" not "Expand". I tried to reply to this yesterday
and it seems that my replies continue to get lost. I hope this helps . . .

Have you tried SFC /SCANNOW from the recovery console?
