Missing Network Places icons/shortcuts

There have been questions similar to mine sent to the group before, but
the solution that's been described doesn't seem to work for me.

My desktop and laptop are networked, the former XP Home SP2 & the
latter XP Pro SP2. I can see all my shared folders(and subfolders)when
I view & select the appropriate workgroup computer on either machine.
But if I simply open My Network Places, I can make no sense of the
shortcuts/icons I find there. For example, only 3 of 14 (top level)
shared folders show up for the Desktop and a similar, though larger,
proportion show up for the laptop. On the laptop, some of the shortcuts
that show in My Network Places are for subfolders, even when the
subfolder's top level folder is missing.

I tried "Add a network place", which has been suggested on the list.
But when I use the browse button to select a folder, I am shown *only*
the list of shortcuts/icons that already exist and are already shown as
Network Places; I've found no way to expand that list. - If I try to
manually enter a shared folder name, I'm told in every instance that
the folder I've entered does not appear to be a valid folder, even if I
(manually) enter one that's on the browse list.

I've resisted putting all the folders I wish to share in Shared
Documents, because there are so many of them. Basically, as a one-user
network, I actually wish for most folders to be shareable, but haven't
quite reached that level yet.

Any clues to arrive at a solution will be much appreciated.

Justine,

you could share the entire drive and remove the other shares.

Not sure whether there are any problems with this on XP Home,
but it certainly works on XP Pro.
