Missing network hardware - network adapter

Hi, I can no longer access the internet and I get the message 'missing
network hardware' and I have no network adapter mentioned in my device
manager.

What should I do? I'm not a technical person ...please help

I have read this and looked up network adapters and I still don't know how I
can solve this. I don't know whether this is a hardware failure - the network
adapter is no longer there ...would I have to buy a new one and add this in
or is there something wrong? I am more than willing to read up anything to
find a solution and fix this problem, I just want someone experienced to
advise me and tell me what options I have and hopefully quickly find a
solution.

and the network adapter is not listed in the windows xp control panel, what
has happened to it?

First thing to do is to check the back of your PC, or laptop, and see if you
can visiually locate the network adapter. This is normal a jack that look
like a phone jack, but needs more that 4 wires (8 exactly.) Once you find
it, check to see if there is any indicators (LED lights) are on. If there
are no lights, then your network adapter is "dead".

This is where the network cable goes in I take it....the light does go on but
it's not flashing like it does on other machines.
