no network adapter?

Hi, my friend's hard drive crashed on his dell desktop pc, no backups,
no utilities disk. I installed a new hard drive and loaded XP Home
edition.

Now in device manager, there is no network adapter shown, and Ethernet
has the yellow question mark.
Using my pc, I downloaded some drivers from dell's website, burned to
cd and loaded onto his pc, but
cannot fix the Ethernet issue.

questions -

he was using verizon DSL at his house. Does that mean he has a network
adapter? There is a
jack on the back of his pc for a network cable. I cannot identify if
this is a network adapter. It has no board on it;
says "BEL" on the top (belkin?).

what drivers contain the Ethernet software? I think i tried all except
BIOS

Not sure but some DSL units connect to USB ports.

Also, is you re-installed XP, did you re-install the motherboard
chipset drivers? Usually by installing the chipset drivers can help
to access any built-in device (built on to the motherboard.)

using the dell site, i am offered 3 or 4 chipset drivers. Not knowing
which one
is correct, i loaded each of them. Still no ethernet.

Thanks for the USB suggestion. I will call him and find out about
that..

He connects via a LAN cable from the verizon (modem? router?)
so, since there's no network adapter showing in device manager, can I
assume
the ethernet is used?

I guess once i'm home tonite i will attempt to identify his
motherboard and go
to that companies website searching for drivers.

the pc has a "service tag" of 5 digits on it, which is entered into
the Dell driver site.
Dell then shows like 4 chipset drivers.. multiple drivers for each hw
section of the pc.

sorry - this is incorrect. I got the service tag number from home, and
there's only
1 chipset driver listed. I will load this tonite. Pretty sure i
already have, but i'll double check.

fixed. was neither chipset nor bios, but one of the 7 network drivers.
only 1 was for a non-wireless card and it immediately installed the
network adapter.
thanks for the help!
