Missing necessary file... need help!

my computer seems to be missing a file that's needed by .NET Framework. The
file is "msvcr80.dll". I have tried re-installing .NET Framework 2.0, doing
a system restore, and finding the file in my back-ups all to no avail. This
problem occurred after one of my kids tried installing a program that was
loaded with spy and adware. After running my programs to eliminate all the
malware I used Norton Windoctor to correct any problems that may have
occurred which is how I discovered this problem. I have not been able to
locate this file anywhere on my system and the closest thing I have to it is
"msvcr71.dll" in my back-ups. Can someone tell me what this file is for and
how I can restore it? Oh...one other thing...System Restore will not restore
to a previous date, not even to the previous day.

Thanks in advance

S.M.W.

Have you done a full search for the file on your HD? You should find it under one of
the folders in Windows/WinSxS - large folder name.
If found, just copy the same to the Windows/System32 folder.
Common problem with Nortons and that's all I did.

For info on System Restore - see MVP Bert Kinney's System Restore web page at

I've checked there and there wasn't one there. I've also run a search on the
entire HD and came up empty on that too. Not only that I un-installed .NET
Framework 2.0 using add/remove programs and now it will not re-install and I
get this error message
"error creating process
<C:\DOCUME~1\owner\locals~1\temp\IXP000.tmp\install.exe>. Reason;
C:\windows\system32\advpack.dll"
I've tried renaming this .dll, moving it to another folder and deleting it
and it copies itself back to the original folder.
Any ideas on what may be going on? I've run several virus scans and came up
with nothing (my anti-virus software is very much up to date) but I'm
starting to worry that I may have a virus that my software can't detect.
Thanks for your Assistance

You probably don't have the file because you uninstalled .Net Framework 2.0

Anti-virus out of date is a concern. Suggest you do some cleaning then deal with .Net
Framework later.

Ahh...Thank you very much! I've downloaded the file and now I'm ready to
tackle the next problem which is;
How can I get NET Framework 2.0 to re-install?
I uninstalled the program after all attempts to re-install over the existing
copy failed. I did this to try and get a clean install. Now when I try to
re-install NET Framework 2.0 I get this error message:
C:\DOCUME~1\owner\locals~1\temp\IXP000.tmp\install.exe>. Reason;
C:\windows\system32\advpack.dll"
I've tried renaming advpack.dll to oldadvpack.dll, moving it to another
folder, and deleting it and it copies itself back to the original folder.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
S.M.W.
