Updates and Syst File Checker problems

I

Ian

Thanks again Josie and Ross for your informed advice. After the precaution of
disabling add-ons, and getting a clean bill of health from numerous scans I
was at last able to insert the file qutil.dll in System 32 and register it.
[My stupid mistake had been trying to insert it in System 32\dllcache\ ]

However, I suspect that there might be hidden damage or more missing files :-

1) My first effort to improve things was an attempt at Windows Update but
unfortunately -
The following update was not installed
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family
Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86

2) My next step was the XP System File Checker
Inserted original XP CD and clicked EXIT
Clicked Start/Run and typed in:
sfc /scannow
Got message
"Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the
DLL cache.
Insert your Windows XP Home Edition CD-Rom now"
RETRY after RETRY after RETRY did not result in progress. Obliged to cancel
and quit.
I later discovered that getting files from recovery disk is not possible
after SP 3 installed. (Perhaps it is partly installed or damaged in some way).

Although after 6 types of scan, (no more please), computer is "clean", I am
still
getting problems such as 1) and 2).
Guessing that these are possibly due to missing files or incorrect
configuration
how would you suggest I proceed ?

Regards - Ian
