missing maxkernl.dll

I can not get my scanner to work. I dowloaded a new driver, but each time
the Wizard tries to install, it cant find the Maxkernl.dll. Looked at some
commercial repair software, but am reluctant to buy out of concern for
problems. Wher can I get the required file(s) and where do I install them
and how?

maxkrnl.dll does not appear to be a Microsoft file. You may be infested by
malware.
