Missing Internet Connection

Q

Quaoar

I have two laptops, XP Home, Linksys wireless cards, Linksys wireless
router, and cable modem. All of this has worked, and continues to work
flawlessly so far as I can tell. Both laptops have identical network
setups in every detail.

Now here's the curiosity: one laptop has not only a Wireless Network
connection under Lan or High-speed internet, but an Internet Connection
Icon. One does not have the Internet Connection Icon, although it once
had one prior to SP1.

My anal-retentive personality is greatly troubled (for no obvious
apparent reason) about this Internet Connection Icon being either
redundant or missing and what might be the reason for the difference
between the two laptop settings that I cannot see.

Thanks for any comments.

That icon represents your router, and clicking it lets you monitor and
control the router. To get the icon on a computer running XP SP1,
make sure that:

1. The Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control Client is
installed:

a. Go to Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs.
b. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
c. Double click Networking Services.
d. Put a check mark in the appropriate box.

2. The SSDP Discovery Service is running:

a. Right click My Computer, and click Manage.
b. Double click Services and Applications.
c. Double click Services.
d. Double click SSDP Discovery Service. If the Service status is
Stopped, click Start.

You might need to disable and then enable the network connection after
changing a setting above.

Gateway Device Discovery is installed and SSDP is Automatic. Like I
said, my network is fully functional and works flawlessly. I think the
Internet Gateway disappeared when I improved the security settings in
the router, including changing the IP address block after the network
was intially set up. I wonder if the changed IP block is the source of
its disappearance? Anyway the system works like it should. Thanks for
your comments.
