Missing Icons

Every now and then my desktop background, icons, and taskbar vanish briefly
and then re-appear, but afterwards several icons that were in the sys tray
have vanished, though the programs they relate to seem to be running OK.

Any ideas?

Explorer shut down due to an error (icons disappearing) and performed its
default action for that situation: a reset (icons reappearing). Not all of
your tray icons have a means to reload themselves when this occurs and they
disappear from the tray. Log off and log back on. They should restart and
appear. If some are still missing, you may need to restart the system.

Check Event Viewer to see if there is any mention of the error and what
files other than Explorer are mentioned. Items in Event Viewer carry a
date/time stamp. Warning/alert items are marked with a yellow icon. Errors
are marked with red. Double click the ones with date/time stamps that
coincide with the reset of Explorer to, hopefully, gain more info about the
error.

PS: This reset can also happen with a change to the display. Example:
Closing a game that uses a different display mode than normal windows
causes desktop to reset.
