Sound Icon on the 'Taskbar'

For some reason the 'Sound' Icon on the 'Taskbar' has vanishes. I have
opened the 'control panel', then open the 'Sounds and Audio Devices',
then tried to check the 'Place volume icon in the taskbar'. I receive an
error message "Windows cannot display ... because the Volumn Control
Program has not been installed. To install it, use Add/Remove program in
Control Panel." It was there until recently then disappeared. I
installed service pack 2 and did some clean up maintenance but I don’t
know exactly when it disappeared. I looked in the add/remove program
under Add/remove Windows components but didn’t find any reference to
installing sound components. At his point this is not a biggie but I
would like to make a repair. Can someone let me know where I might find
the program to reinstall the volume control? I do have the WinXP Pro CD
but I really don't know what to look for.

TaurArian,
Thanks for the input. I looked at the web site you posted and in spite
of looking in Google I missed it. I'll get back to you when I have the
chance to implement the information offered there. Just getting ready to
go for a doctors appointment.
Thanks again.

I HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND SPENT MANY HOURS PAINFULLY MAKING MORE
PROBLEMS WITH MY MACHINE - HOWEVER MY TIME SPENT IS BEGINNING TO PAY OFF AND
AFTER 18 HOURS I ACHEIVED THE FIX THAT I NEEDED. SADLY THERE ARE A NUMBER OF
THINGS TO CONFIGURE WHEN THIS PROBLEM ARISES.
1. tHE MIXER. 2. tHE MIDI 3. tHE WAVE - ALL OF WHICH HAVE A DOZEN FILES
HOLDING UP TO A DOZEN DRIVERS - WHICH MAY OR MAY NOT BE VERIFIED OR SIGNED SO
YOU HAVE TO DO THAT TOO. IF YOU CAN BE BOTHERED TO SPEND HOURS LEARNING -
TAKE YOUR TIME, GET A PEN AND PAPER AND SLOWLY YOU WILL LEARN THE UNIVERSES
THAT DWELL WITHIN OUR BOXES. - GOOD LUCK! - I KNOW THAT I HAD A BIT WHEN I
FIXED IT - BUT I WAS VERY TIRED AND SLOPPY - SO TRY NOT TO CAUSE MORE MESS.
IT TOOK ME TWO MORE HOURS TO MOP UP THE MESS ID MADE. RAYMOND HODRIEN. -

Thanks a lot TaurArian. Just got back from thae doctors and went to the
web site to read directions. Worked a treat however CMD told me there
was no destination for the sndvol32.exe so I looked in the CD drive and
found it Changed the ex_ to exe and pasted it into the system32 folder.
Nice to have the volume control back where it belongs.

Doesn't matter how you got there, the main thing is you achieved it.
Glad the volume control is back where it belongs.
