Missing Icons in Notification Area

Some of the icons that usually appear in the notification
area (right-most part of Taskbar) no long appear. The
missing icons are all non-windows icons that should be
loaded at startup. It appears to me that the programs are
still running in the backgound, although they do not show
up. Once in a while the icons do appear, but most of the
time they don't. I have messing with the hide-inactive
icons settings with no luck. Any ideas on how to fix this?

I have a similar problem. All my tray icons are there at boot time, but
after a while (typically 30-60 minutes), the screen desktop 'blinks', i.e.,
all icons on the desktop, in the tray, and on the task bar vanish for a
fraction of a second, and then they come back, except for most icons in the
tray. The only tray icons that remain are time, volume control, and
ZoneAlarm. If they have been running in the background before, the
applications of the missing icons are still running in the background --
just their icons are missing. -- Not serious, just annoying.
Any suggestions anyone?
Thanks.

On my XP Pro this happens when explorer.exe crashes and
reboots spontaneously - once every few hours! Some tray
icons do not reappear till next boot, though the apps
keep running.

I turn explorer.exe off completely if I have a serious
work session I have to complete on XP. XP then behaves
almost as nice as 2K.

Following Kelly's suggestion, I disabled UPnP in my setup and I have had no
loss of icons for the past 48 hours; also, Explorer has stopped crashing.
Seems to work.
Thanks, Kelly.
