Due to how files are stored, there is a difference between total size and
total size on disk.

Suggestions:

Move some of your data files off to CD or DVD. Multimedia files are hefty
in size. Moving some of these (ones you've added, not default files) is a
quick way to regain space. Older files that are seldomly accessed are good
candidates for archival as well.

Uninstall programs that you never use.

Consider getting a larger drive. No need to replace the one that you have
(unless you really want to go that route) as it can be installed as a
second drive. If this is a laptop, there are choices available that also do
not involve removing the original drive.
