Cannot defrag, help with command prompt please

S

Sylvia M

This may be too long an explanation for my problem, sorry, I'm just
trying to define it so as to get a solution....

On my HP PC, XP, ,2005, 250 GB, SP3

When my Word documents started hanging, coming up very slowly, I went
into Defrag and analyzed C, I have never seen it as fragmented: Lots of
red = fragmented, lots of white = free space intermingled, and in
blue=contiguous it is broken up with lots of white intermingled.

I can't think of anything that I did, or downloaded, that would have
caused the fragmentation. I scanned for viruses, negative.

In trying to defragment this C drive, it gets as far as compacting
files, and after about 5% defrag, a pop-up says "Defrag complete...Some
files on this volume could not be defragmented. Please check the
defragmentation report for the list of these files."
-------------------------------------
Defrag report reads in part:
Free Space = 51%
Total Frag:16% , File frag 32%, free space frag 0%
Total Fragmented files =3
Total Excess fragments = 12,479 Average fragments per file 1.05
Pagefile fragmentation
Pagefile size 1.40 GB
Fragmented folders = 1
Master File Table (MFT) fragmentation:
Total MFT size =282 MB
MFT record count 234,445, %MFT in use 81%
Total MFT fragments = 3

BUT no information on "Files that did not fragment"
----------------------------------------
Next, I ran chkdsk, and then ran defrag again with same results.

I read some more, went to command prompt and tried to force
defragmentation, but I'm having trouble even getting the correct command
to see if this I can Force a defrag.
I get as far as C:|WINDOWS\Help> automatically coming up, but what I
type in is not accepted. This is where I believe that someone might
help me, because once the command takes, it Might clear up the defrag
problem.

Given:
"Usage:
defrag <volume> [-a] [-f] [-v] [-?]
volume drive letter or mount point (d: or d:\vol\mountpoint)
-a Analyze only
-f Force defragmentation even if free space is low
-v Verbose output
-? Display this help text "

The very last line I put in,
C:\WINDOWS\Help> <d: Volume HP_PAVILION (C) [-f] [-v]
command prompt gave the response of: "Access is denied."

Previously I have put in the following, and mainly get 'The system
cannot find the file specified'
I have tried variously:
defrag <volume> HP_PAVILION (C)[f]
and <C>[-f] and was replied with 'The system cannot find the file
specified'
then I tried <C>[-f] which answered "The syntax of the command is
incorrect"
When I put in:defrag (d;C) [-f] [-v] [-?] I was given this clue:
"The volume identifier is not valid. The volume identifier must be a
valid local drive letter or mount point."
That's when I modified to:C:\WINDOWS\Help> <d: Volume HP_PAVILION (C)
[-f] [-v]
and was given the response of: "Access is denied."

Please help first with the correct command line.
I'll report back if I can or if I can't force a more complete defrag.

Just use the drive letter, for example: defrag c: -a

The mount point can be obtained with the MOUNTVOL command, hardly any
one uses this syntax. When used with a mount point the command would
look something like this:

defrag \\?\Volume{fbf8c289-0931-11de-8b0f-00096ba787d9} -a

where \\?\Volume{fbf8c289-0931-11de-8b0f-00096ba787d9} would have been
obtained from the Mountvol command or from the registry's
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices key, no one uses this to run
the command manually, it would be mostly used by programs or utilities.

Fix your Word documents from opening very slow do the following

Search for normal. dot. When found rename it to normal.old. Then open Word and voila
magically Word documents and files will open as quick as if Word was just installed

Hmmm...that seems to have worked, Thanks!

I'll still need to defrag my C drive, so thanks for that post, John x 2.

I figured it out. I cmd prompted, defragged, but no change.
Then I deleted my largest and almost most recent compressed file, after
saving to flash drive. Emptied my recycle bin, and defragged again.
Much cleaner!

Thanks for your help.
