HP Recovery D., give more GBs?

I'm running XP Pro with SP3, 250 GBs

I keep getting a pop-up window telling me I don't have enough
back-up space.
It claims to have 8.47 GB filled and 32 MB free space.
But back-up folder only claims :171 MB (179,630,619 bytes)

Removing 'all but most recent restore point' changes no numbers.

Disc clean-up sez it would add 0

Tried Check Disk..'Automatically fix file system error',
and also 'recover bad areas'....
This Changed used space to 7.55 GBs
free space 970 MB
Also defragged D

I wouldn't mind giving it more, but how to do so, please?

Shall I back-up the files to my external drive,
then delete them all from D and cause a new recovery point?
or...???

There is a difference between "recovery" and "restore"
Recovery partition is usually what HP placed on your HD where resides all of the
files needed to "recover" your Operating System and whatever else came with the
computer to a just purchased state. This partition should not be used for any
other
purpose...nothing added nothing subtracted !!!
and judging by the 8gb size of this D partition that's what it is!!

"restore" points are created by the operating system on a daily basis and
usually on the drive
restore is monitoring. In other words if you are monitoring the C drive the
"restore" points are
created on the C drive. Once you turn off monitoring the D partition the problem
will stop.
This is done by right clicking "mycomputer"/properties and then the "System
restore" tab.
Click the drive and then click settings.

If D is a partition YOU created please do post back

As mentioned, the "recovery" partition are for restoring the system should
you need to reinstall Windows - though if you don't also have reinstall CDs,
it's of no help at all if the drive itself fails. The recovery folders
may be hidden, which would be why you don't see what's using the space.

If you're backing up to another partition on the same physical disk - this
is a very bad idea, because you lose the backups at the same time the drive
fails.

Can you provide some more details?

D has always been named HP Recovery.
When opened, it shows a locked Recovery portion,
and also a Norton N360_ Backup.

Let me guess ;-)
I dragged the N360 out onto desktop, thus putting a copy into C (?),
Then deleted that file from D.
That gave me 7.38 GBs of necessary Restore to be left alone.
the 1.11 GBs of free space should stop the pop-up nagging window.
So thanks for getting me straight on that!

On My Computer, I found an Icon with 'Norton Backup Drive'...
Upon opening I find 2 'Default Sets'
and one dated 6/12/09 file.

Since I'm stuck with N360, at least for now, I'd let it backup either to
C,
or better still to my external drive, which is safer-keeping.

Though on second thought, I would just as soon just back-up
my files selectively, directly to my external drive, by dragging or
copy-paste and ignore as much of Norton's "Help" as I can.

Any thoughts on the above options?

BTW, I made a set of reinstall CDs when I first got the PC home and
realized it had NO discs, just built-ins. Those included Norton, which
is virtually impossible to completly remove...that and laziness have
kept me renewing + laptop came from Dell with Norton installed, and the
same renewal took care of both...eventually I'll switch, probably to
Kaspberry(sp).
