To get a reasonable level of performance from Windows XP you need to
go well beyond the minimums suggested by Microsoft. Experience has
shown that RAM quantity, at least up to 512 mb, is probably more
important that CPU speed.

My suggestions for reasonable performance and usability from Windows
XP are:
- at least 512 mb of RAM if the CPU speed is less than 700 mhz; or
- at least 384 mb of RAM if the CPU is between 700 mhz and 1 ghz; or
- at least 256 mb of RAM if the CPU is faster than 1 ghz.

Additionally you should have at least 4 gb of available space on the
hard drive.

Good luck
