"I recently had to reinstall windows vista basic because I uninstalled my
Norton Antivirus and lost Internet Explorer..I don't know how that happened.
I reinstalled my Windows Vista from the same dvd I used the first time but
this time Microsoft Works never installed. I've searched everywhere and the
same message of "not found" is all I can get. I backed up what I could before
reinstalling but microsoft works didn't get backed up. Does anyone have
experience with this situation or any ideas of what I could do before I have
to pay for it when it should have come with the package like the last time.

Microsoft Works is not part of the Vista operating system. It is usually
included in "restore disks" provided by the computer mftr. (HP, Dell,
etc.). It sounds as though you only installed Vista or perhaps you used
only Disk 1 of a multi-disk recovery set. Since you didn't give any
information about your computer (what type, OEM, etc.) and didn't tell
us what you used to install Vista, that's as specific as I can get.
Sometimes OEMs like Dell will provide a real operating system disk and
additional disks including drivers (Dell Resource CD) and separate disks
for applications such as Works. In this latter case, you would install
1) the operating system; 2) the drivers; 3) any OEM-provided software.

I'm sorry but i'm a rookie when it comes to computers but I do know it's a HP
Pavilion Windows Vista Home Premium. I'm sure microsoft works was one of the
programmes installed the first time because my wife told me it was and i'm
not going to argue with that...i'd like to continue to be fed. I have no
problem paying to have it installed, it's just the principle of learning how
to fix situations like this thru trial and error. I do appreciate you taking
the time to offer any suggestions.

Malke is correct , works is a seperate disc that would've been installed
after the operating system. When i purcheased my Dell ( 3 years ago now and
still going strong!) works was a seperate disc and was already installed on
my pc.Check your discs that came with the computer and it should be there
somewhere. It was seperate for my computer but with some manufacturers it is
all on one recovery dvd ( which i personally don't like, but some people i
know do simply for it's ease of use).Good luck with being fed too :).

You still haven't told me how you installed Vista. Upgrade, came
preinstalled, restored from the special partition with a keypress, etc.
So all I can suggest is that you contact HP tech support. Or look
through your disks that perhaps came with the system for the
Applications disk. Or look on the Start Menu to see if there is an entry
for HP applications recovery.

You should install the free openoffice suite and stay as far as
humanly possible away from Microsoft (doesn't) Works. It is a terrible
product.

No, that's where you stick your head any and every chance you get.

Mikko,

Google 'Using HP Recovery Manager' and select first entry. Re-installing
Works only is simple using Recovery Manager.

But Open Office is not an official Microsoft product.

Using it may void your warranty.

Be careful then. If your windows is running on any computer besides a
microsoft computer, it may void your warranty (HP, Toshiba, Dell,
Fujitsu, Acer, Gateway, Lenovo, etc.)!

Microsoft Works is an application program. It's not part of Vista,
which is an operating system. You reinstalled the operating system,
but you didn't reinstall Microsoft Works.

Installing Microsoft Works is a separate step. Check the CDs/DVDs you
got with the computer. Works will probably be on one of them. If not,
contact your manufacturer to find out how to install it.

I've searched everywhere and the
same message of "not found" is all I can get. I backed up what I could before

No, in general you can *not* back up applications. They have to be
reinstalled from the original media. Even if you had backed it up,
when you restored it, it wouldn't have worked.
