For the past few days I've been unable to open Microsoft Word or access any
of my documents. I try to end the task and nothing happens, just a small
block on my screen freezes up. Then I can't shut down either. Can anyone help
me? I'm really starting to lose my rag with this computer, I've only had it
three months..

There lies a clue.. do you have a trial version of MS Office installed?..
and did you take note of the warnings re. your trial period getting
shorter?..

You have some options open to you.. you can buy MS Office and install it..
you can download and run Open Office.. http://www.openoffice.org/ .. you can
buy MS Works which includes MS Word 2002.. you can buy WordPerfect Suite
12.. your call..

Kate,

I have been having the exact same problem. My computer is new as well and
I'm pretty sure I do not have a trial version. I've tried system restore and
that will fix it for a couple of days, but then it doesn't work again. Were
you able to fix your computer? If so, how? Or does anyone know what to do
to fix it?

Try this:
Go to START - RUN and type in
winword /a
Then press the Enter key or click on the Ok.

If Word works this way, you have corrupted template file.
Search and find all copies of the file "normal.dot" and delete them.
(They may be hidden files, so set your search to look for hidden files as
well.

Then when your restart Word, it will make a new "normal.dot" file and should
work.

I too am having the same problem, what is up with this, I also have a new
computer.

There is currently no computer that ships "off the shelf" with a full
version of Microsoft Office. To my knowledge, based on experience and also
some extensive web research, all computers do come with the 60 day trial
version *UNLESS* you pay extra for the full version.

All of you reporting "the same problem" on a "new computer" have reached the
expiration date of the trial version. Microsoft Office Standard Edition is
$299 Retail. It amazes me that someone will go into a computer store, buy a
computer, monitor and printer for $300, and then become upset when they
discover that it does not include $1000 worth of software.

You have the trial version.

Thanks Mike, I appreciate your help. I do have the whole Microsoft Office
package, not just the trial version. I also have Norton anti-virus and
internet security and all that jazz and all my friends threw in their two
cents as to what protection I needed. Yet the scans weren't showing anything
so I didn't contemplate that a virus could be to blame. However, a friend of
mine told me to download ad-aware and after it removed a fair amount of
rubbish, not only was Word working once more, but so was MSN messenger which
hadn't worked for a few weeks either. Madness. I definitely recommend
Ad-Aware to give your computer a clean up and I hope that works for those of
you who are having trouble.
Also, Bobby, I don't think it's necessary to be so derisive.
