Microsoft VM question

Hello all,
Sorry for barging straight in with a question like this, but I can't find
any information about this on the Microsoft site. Hopefully someone here
will be able to help.

We have an in-house package, whose setup program checks for, and if
necessary installs or updates, the various components it requires. On of
these is v.5 of Microsoft Virtual Machine, which on my brand new XP machine
it says does not exist. It further tells me that this is a protected system
component and can only be upgraded with a service pack or later release of
the OS. Strangely, I've installed this package on a slightly older XP PC
with no problems. Reading the info. on the MS site, it seems that they may
no longer be including VM with XP/Explorer, so that's perhaps the reason for
my problem. But does anyone know if I can still download this, or if not how
I might get around the upgrade problem? I've downloaded and installed the
Java package from the Sun site, to which I was directed from the MS site,
but this hasn't made any difference.

Many thanks in advance to anyone who might be able to shed some light on
this.

Regards,
Simon King.

Hi

Take a look at this post by Jim Byrd to get some information on how to add
MS JVM to your WinXP installation::

Many thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, all these downloads are for
upgrades only. Since my XP PC doesn't have VM installed at all, I'm looking
for way to get it on there in the first place! Any thoughts?
Thanks again for replying so soon.

Hi

Start with installing v. 3805 (disregard that the post say
Win2000 SP4, it will install on WinXP as well).

Greetings --

As the result of a lawsuit by Sun Microsystems, and the ensuing
settlement, Microsoft is no longer allowed to provide its own Java
Virtual Machine to Windows users. You can get almost the same
functionality by downloading Sun's version of Java from
http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html. If you want the broader
capabilities of Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine, it is still
available from a lot of 3rd-party web sites, some of which are listed
here: http://www.java-virtual-machine.net/download.html.

If you do choose the Microsoft JVM, be sure to visit Windows
Update to apply a needed security patch.

MS produced a Java that extends the language as defined by Sun, so that
it would 'work better' with Windows. This was not included in windows
XP, but was available as a separate download, and included in XP SP1

(There appear to be sites that have taken advantage of this, and will
not work with the Sun one).

Sun sued MSoft, and the ruling in the case prohibits MS from making
'their' engine available as a download - so it is left out of the
revised SP1a

You can still get a 3805 or 3809 build from some sites that are *not*
MSoft sites - and MSoft is not going to object.
eg 3805 from Http://www.bigblackglasses.com/staff/downloads/msjavx86.exe

Once you have such an older version you can get the 816093 'critical
security update' which is effectively a complete build, 3810
