Microsoft VM for XP and SP1

I have just discovered that, somehow, my XP Professional is without
Microsoft VM. I have spent several hours looking for a download on the
Microsoft VM on the MS site and the SUN site but without luck. What I have
found are the updates which will not install without the basic VM being
there. I also tried to find a download of MS XP SP1 but could not find it,
as it is reported to have the SP1. Generally, I wind up at Microsoft's udate
center, which sees that I have SP1 installed; therefore it does not offer it
to me. Does anyone have a solution or thoughts about this problem,
particularly, where I can find the downloads that I need. I do a lot of
document searches on public records and the images that are available are
unviewable to me, I suspect because I am missing this VM. Thanks in advance
for your assistance.

Microsoft no longer distributes the Microsoft Virtual Machine.
Instead, download Java from here:

Some information from Microsoft on the subject, including a link regarding
dependencies: http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java/

A site from which MSVM may be downloaded, if necessary:

Thanks for the Post. It did not load. It said that the file ja14200 in one
of the subdirectories of Documents and Settings could not be found.

Do I need to have service pack 2 loaded. I do not have that loaded because
of the problems people have been having with it.

Any thoughts?

Understand that because of a court decision Microsoft will stop all Java
support recommends that you use the Sun JRE.

Thanks Ray. The problem seems to be that I do not have VM installed at all.
The second site you mentioned provides downloads which appear to be updates,
so you have to have an earlier version already installed. I am hoping to
find this original .... Any thoughts.

This site here has the basic VM for download as well as the updates, you will
need to install all three downloads with a reboot between each one.

Hi

Take a look at this post by Jim Byrd to get some information on how
to add MS JVM to your OS installation::

http://groups.google.com/[email protected]

If you are running Windows XP with no MS JVM installed, start with
installing v. 3805 (disregard that the post say Win2000 SP4, it will
install on WinXP as well).

Dan

Thanks for the information, Frank. I was looking for that site. BTW, Terry
may want to consider a dual-boot machine with 98SE and XP Pro. since 98SE
allows you to have MS-JAVA which imo is leaps and bounds above Sun Java and
98SE support does not end for critical updates until 30 June 2006 with
MS-JAVA being supported until the end of 2007. I like that timeline because
it is a long time in the world of computers. LOL!

I tried to load msjavx86 but got the error message that it would upgrade
only to an already existing version of VM. This does not seem to be the
basic version then. Any thoughts, help.

I have no VM runnning which I have checked several different ways.

Please ignore my last post. It dawned on me that perhaps I had downloaded
the wrong platform versiion for the script, even though the name is the
same. So I tried a different platform and it installed....yippie...

Problem solved!! Thanks to all for the assistance.

I have to say in passing, that I do not like the way MS is handling its
upgrades, although I can understand the need for what they are doing. It
was very frustrating to try and find a copy of SP1 as a standalone. Each
time, I was brought back to the MS site that looked at my IE and said you
have SP1 and do not need it. Not in those words, of course. And I did not
want to install the SP2.

As I learned, VM was not in the SP1 as others had mentioned, as MS stopped
supporting it. Frustrating nevertheless. I could have saved a lot of time
if I had been able to get the standalone and then find out that it did not
help. Lots of time wasted.

I am wondering what is going to happen to VM down the road, as it seems that
it is widely used. Does anyone have a short and intelligent (something I
would be able to understand) that explains how the transition is going to
occur...and what the average user has to do? Sun seems to be talking a
different language, hence it was hard for me to go from MS VM verbage to the
programs Sun was mentioning. What I would like to know is EXACTLY what
would be the current replacement for MS VM. Perhaps it is best to switch to
that, if that is what the future is going to be and then stick with SUN
updates, since MS is being forced to abandon its efforts in this area.

Use Sun's java, www.sun.com . For downloads use the windows update catalog:

Microsoft Java is superior to Sun Java, imo. Remember the transition period
lasts until the end of 2007 when Microsoft Java will no longer be supported.

I am just wondering what is going to happen after 2007. Most users of an OS
just load it up on the assumption that it is ready to go. If MS, which is
the big boy on the block, is not going to support java scripts, then what
will these people do, as VM is needed to get to many image files. I for one
could not read government scans of documents without it. Does this mean that
we have to go out to Sun to get their version of java and somehow load it
into the most recent version of MS?

Clinton

Dan

Well I think we will have to uninstall the Microsoft VM by this point and
yes we will have to install and use the Sun Java version instead. I would
make sure that you are using the latest Microsoft VM which is 3810 because
previous versions have critical security vulnerabilities. <sigh, I am
hoping that there will be more and better alternatives by then since it is a
long time in computer years>

Microsoft will not stop supporting JavaScript. They will stop supporting
Java. Two entirely different things.
