Microsoft Java VM

Mark Irvine

Hi,

I recently bought a new Sony Viao running xp pro with SP1. However the
Microsoft Java VM was not installed. From the documentation on the MS site,
the VM is in SP1, which I have re-applied, however the MS VM is still not
available. I downloaded a MS VM from
java-virtual-machine.net/download.html, how it generated an error saying
that it could only upgrade an existing install.

How can I get the MS VM for xp pro?

Hi Mark.

There is no more MS VM due to Java suing Microsoft over the use of the VM.
you should be able to download the Java VM from java.com

Rudi,

The court action was from Sun Microsystems not "Java"

No, MS lost a lawsuit that Sun (the originators of Java) filed against
them, and no longer distribute a VM. The MS JVM, now obsolete, is
available someplace. I'd recommend you get the up-to-date one from
Sun: http://java.sun.com/getjava

Hi

Take a look at this post by Jim Byrd to get some information on how to add
MS JVM to your OS installation::

If you are running Windows XP with no MS JVM installed, start with
installing v. 3805 (disregard that the post say Win2000 SP4, it will
install on WinXP as well).

Greetings --

As the result of a lawsuit by Sun Microsystems, and the ensuing
settlement, Microsoft is no longer allowed to provide its own Java
Virtual Machine to Windows users. You can get almost the same
functionality by downloading Sun's version of Java from
http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html. If you want the broader
capabilities of Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine, it is still
available from a lot of 3rd-party web sites, some of which are listed
here: http://www.java-virtual-machine.net/download.html.

If you do choose the Microsoft JVM, be sure to visit Windows
Update to apply a needed security patch.
