What are Microsoft long term plans for this product? Are
they going to charge for it? Or, is it always going to
be a free downloadable addition to Windows XP?

The features currently available in the beta will be available at no
additional cost for licensed Windows customers. In addition, there will be
a version for managed corporate enterprise environments which will have a
cost.
