Revealed - How Microsoft planned Xbox 2 for Christmas 2004

Microsoft's headlong rush to the next generation leads to a serious gamble
in '05

Internal schedules at Microsoft as recently as last November called for the
Xbox 2 to be launched in time for Christmas 2004, sources close to the
company have revealed - and the firm is still thought to be considering a
launch by mid-2005.

Sources at a number of key Xbox developers, who cannot be named for legal
reasons, have confirmed that when the company originally revealed the
outline specification for Xbox 2 late last year, the company surprised its
partners by suggesting that the new hardware would be in shops for Christmas
2004.

The system has since slipped from that schedule - which also called for an
unveiling of the specification at GDC, at the high-profile press conference
which the company eventually used for the launch of the XNA development
platform - but Microsoft apparently still has hopes to get the new console
out in mid-2005, ahead of the Christmas 2005 release anticipated by most
commentators.

"I think they underestimated how hard it was going to be to build a console
that wasn't using PC architecture," one source familiar with the firm's
console development efforts told us today. "But they're racing to get to the
market as soon as possible - they really want to reverse the head start that
Sony had last time."

A launch in mid-2005 would probably give Microsoft a full year's head-start
on Sony's PS3, and possibly even more, as some commentators have suggested
that Sony could allow the PS3 to slip further in order to allow the
PlayStation Portable to hold the limelight for longer.

One consequence of Microsoft's eagerness to launch a next-generation console
so soon is that the firm has allegedly encouraged developers to move to next
generation development ahead of schedule. While few if any companies have
moved their PS2 teams onto PS3 projects as yet, discussions with developers
over the past week have revealed that quite a few are wrapping up work on
the Xbox with their current projects and are moving on to Xbox 2 development
imminently - or have done so already. It's not a universal trend by any
means, as several companies are still planning to start new Xbox titles in
the coming months, but it's certainly a different landscape from the
thriving environment that is PlayStation 2 development.

Of Microsoft's internal big-name studios, it's seemingly planned that Halo 2
will be Bungie's last Xbox title before moving on to Xbox 2 development,
while UK-based Rare is already working on Xbox 2 software - with the highly
anticipated Perfect Dark follow-up apparently planned for the
next-generation hardware. The firm's range of XSN Sports titles have also
been cancelled in 2004 and will now appear in 2005 instead - quite possibly
as early Xbox 2 titles, thus giving the new console a full range of sports
games from the first stages of its lifespan.

This is a risky gamble for the company. If they can launch the Xbox 2 in
mid-2005, they'll certainly have an impressive head-start and will have the
only next generation platform on the market for at least six to nine months.
However, Xbox users may feel unhappy with the short life-span of their
console as the flow of original titles for the platform dries to a trickle
in 2005 - and if no new console is forthcoming until late in the year, then
2005 begins to look very barren for Microsoft.

IF Xbox 2 came out THIS year, there would be not much better than a Radeon
X800 XT under the hood. maybe R450. probably not R500. Microsoft
would've been incredibly stupid to launch THAT early.

even mid-2005 is early.

who gives a hoot, it's still only output to a tv's crappy res no matter how

Buy a high def TV, or get an XBOX VGA adapter and plug it
into a PC monitor. Then learn how to quit top posting.

Are you a graphics card? Wow, I'm impressed, how do you type with no arms?

All that aside, I think it's far too early, and so is 2005. I for one will
not stupidly go out and buy a next generation Xbox if I feel the one I have
has not been supported to it's potential - and if Rare's Perfect Dark is
delayed till the next Xbox then they can shove it up their big fat American
arseholes. I bought *this* generation of hardware to play games like Perfect
Dark: Zero, and I've not had the privilege, unfortunately. I'm certainly not
going to buy another generation based on promises, again. There is a healthy
competition out there, and I will have 3 (or more) consoles to choose from -
and if I base my purchasing decision on the company that has given me the
gaming I required from this generation of consoles, then Nintendo looks set
to get my money. Then there is PS3 of course. But I'm very sorry Microsoft,
you'll have to try better than this to get my money. Give me the Rare games
I was promised for *this* console....and I may, just may consider it.

What good will that do as it's still no better than 1024x768.

I willing to bet good money that Xbox2 isn't launched until mid 2005.
I've yet to see any games consule launched on time.

So true - gaming console launch dates are the marketing equivalent of
drawing a target around the arrow after it has landed.

Er............

Ati is busy removing alligators from the R420 swamp and is probably a
little distracted. And the PowerPC isn't going anywhere fast. MS has
made their bed with a complete break from Intel/nVidia. Now they can
lie on it. Totally backward incompatible with Xbox1 and likely to be
heavily delayed because the design is not evolutionary from the Xbox1.

Requires a completely new set of development tools and software.
Macs with custom Ati cards ??.........

Mid-2005.. forget it. Maybe Christmas 2005 in the US. Should
have as much attraction as a pet rock elsewhere in the world.

If they are going the 3 CPU way, ponally I'm a bit unsure of that.
(I've heard for a while a 1.5Ghz processor though not the number of
them), the problem will be the software. Its a sodding nightmare
producing not only a top class title, but for a new machine & on a
multi processor architecture and in a short period of time.

In terms of dev tools, yes a major amount of work. At least they would
have settled on the XNA platform so that will help alot and the basis
of the ATI chip set will be familiar to developers, but of course with
any new console you have a consitent platform calling out "exploit my
consistent features" which will almost certainly make getting that
initial A list title a pig if they want to exploit the Xbox 2 features
and not end up like the initial PS2 releases that used fsk all of the
machine capability.

Bungie IIRC are shifting to Xbox 2 development after the release of
Halo 2. Even at Xmas (with some of the team shifting over early) that
leaves **** all time to do development work if they want a summer
release to go with the first units.

Of course on top of that how much would a 3 CPU machine cost, a fsking
lot I expect.

2004 would've insured that the Xbox 2 would utterly and completely fail.
Can't beleive that was ever anything more than pie in the sky.
