microsoft outlook receipts are being sent out without me knowing

I have Outlook 2003 and I noticed read/delivery receipts are being sent out
without me knowing. Apparently these are from messages I have not read.

Recently about 50 were sent out and I got a lot of Delivery Status
Notification (Failure): "This is an automatically generated Delivery Status
Notification.Delivery to the following recipients failed." back from
automated places that can not respond. But some are going to real people and
they think I am sending a virus or something. This type of message gets sent.

Your message

Subject: whatever

was deleted without being read on 4/15/2009 11:23 AM.

Why is it doing this and how do I stop it.

Thanks

I think so but not sure. I have 4 different accounts from hotmail in this
Outlook 2003 that I signed up with a long time ago. Before they stopped
letting you use the free hotmail accounts in Outlook. I guess mine were
granfathered in. Does that make a difference.

Outlook has been sending out these messages all day and it is still going.
You know the little envelope that shows sending status active in bottom
right. It has been active all day long. Some of my messages that got sent
back go back to 2006, maybe earlier. So it is continually sending these
messages.

No, Hotmail accounts are not IMAP, but it's coneivable to me that the same
side-effect could occur. Try using the methods described here:
http://www.howto-outlook.com/howto/deletereadreceipt.htm to see if you have
any read receipts queued.

That did not work, I think because that has to do with IMAP accounts, not
sure? And I think that had to do with one receipt being stuck and repeating
this is for all my old ones. Note: I have always had receipt stuff turned
off or never send etc.

Now I am getting:

Sending' reported error (0x800CCC3C)

which I looked up was too many messages sent in a 24 hour period. So it is
still trying to send them out. Now it is preventing me from sending out
through that account. Any other ideas?
