Has Microsoft pulled the plug on Autosearch?

I am running IE6 v 6.0.2800.1106 with 128 bit encrypt.

I have installed Service Pack 1 and the following patches:
Q824125, Q330994, Q313829, Q832894, Q837009, and Q831167

I have run all malware and bho scanning software to no
avail.

I have my browser set to use YAHOO for all searches
including address bar autosearch. I have my IE6 "Search
from the address bar" options set to "Just display search
results in the main window."

When I type any phrase into my address bar, instead of
finding myself at YAHOO with my search results, as has
been the case for the last 5 years, I get my phrase parsed
in the address line (in this instance, my phrase was
sport.)

http:///? sport

And I get an error screen that says:

The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The
Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or
you may need to adjust your browser settings.

--------------------

Please try the following:

Click the Refresh button, or try again later.

yaa dah yaa dah yaa dah

Cannot find server or DNS Error
Internet Explorer

=====================

When I click my search icon in the tool bar and open a
search frame I DO get YAHOO.

However, when I click on the CUSTOMIZE button in the
search frame I get

"Service Unavailable - DNS Failure - The server is
temporarily unable to service your request. Please try
again later."

Cn anyone tell me what I have going on here?

Thanks,
Blindsite

None of the suggestions have solved my "No autosearch from the address bar" problem.

This is NOT a malware issue as wildly speculated by a number of the hard-headed and more shallow contributors here. Just because it
is a rampant problem right now does not mean that it applies in my case. I am MalWare Free and as far as my registry, I have a line
for line imagery validation tool that I use to double-check my Registry First Aid. CAUTION: Registry First Aid is ONLY recommended
for use by those who ACTUALLY understand Windows. A few of the regulars here have run out of useful ideas and have turned instead
to the childish option of publishing denigrating (useless) statements which can only be for the purpose of self-aggrandizement.

A few others, such as Sandi have continued to try and help but to no avail.

At this point I am willing to do a DLL and BHO inventory to see if I am actually MISSING a module of IE6 that enables autosearch
from the address bar.

Thanks all
(clowns and buffoons need not reply)

In your previous post you said that you were getting this type of activity.
"http:///? sport" the http:/// is an indication that you have been
attacked by CoolWebSearch, a nasty parasite.

How are you trying to use it? Some people still are trying to use it
without entering the command prefix and although that used to "work"
to some extent it was undefined behaviour, so that might have changed.

FWIW I regularly use Google as my AutoSearch provider (on XPsp1)
but when using it I always type ? (question mark, space) first.

I am running IE6 v 6.0.2800.1106 with 128 bit encrypt.

I have installed Service Pack 1 and the following patches:
Q824125, Q330994, Q313829, Q832894, Q837009, and Q831167

Telling us that you have "installed Service Pack 1" may be giving us
an ambiguous clue about your OS. If you mean you installed IE6sp1
then your OS is (probably) not XP and then you should be able to do
an IE Repair.

If you can do an IE Repair please try it. Since a reboot is required
to complete a successful repair I suggest that you close all applications
before starting it and disable your security programs from starting
with the reboot. Using safe mode with the boot might be sufficient
to ensure that the security programs would not interfere with the
remainder of the repair. (Using safe mode is a new option which
I have noticed other MVPs suggesting; it is not something I have
tried and analysed myself.)

I have run all malware and bho scanning software to no
avail.

Including the "latest" CoolWebSearch Shredder and HiJackThis!
scans (which PA Bear suggested to you twice?) Notice that you wouldn't
necessarily have to have malware in order for them to find something wrong
and if you posted the results of the scans as PA Bear suggested you
would be able to have someone give you a more objective second opinion
about the state of your registry. Your choice.

The other thing to be aware of here is that malware does damage
that can be residual even after it has been removed, e.g. if the
uninstaller or remover does an imperfect repair.

I have my browser set to use YAHOO for all searches
including address bar autosearch. I have my IE6 "Search
from the address bar" options set to "Just display search
results in the main window."

In that case it would probably be a good idea to change your
search provider temporarily as a test to see if your symptom
is related to Yahoo only or to AutoSearch more generally
as you assert.

When I type any phrase into my address bar, instead of
finding myself at YAHOO with my search results, as has
been the case for the last 5 years, I get my phrase parsed
in the address line (in this instance, my phrase was
sport.)

http:///? sport

Check your HOSTS file for any modifications to lookups
for MSN addresses. What should be happening is
that your request is sent to

<example>
http://auto.search.msn.com/response.asp?MT=
</example>

Perhaps somehow in your case that is being reduced to
just a question mark (?) Again, though, this is a signature
symptom of residual effects from a search bar hijacking
so treating it as such is very likely to prove effective
even if it turns out not to be.

Oh yes it is.

I have been over, under, through, between, beneath, beside, and betwixt this thing and can not find ANY unwelcome software.

Perhaps it WAS malware that initially STOPPED me from being able to autosearch from the address bar.

But now that it is roto-rooted, I am left without the capability to autosearch even though everything has returned to normal.......

Is there a BHO that enables IE6 to autosearch?

Is there a .DLL?

Is it a deleted Registry key?

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaa...........................

I did. It fixed the problem. For IE6 on a Win98se OS the fix command is quite long and I have included it here for future
reference:

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files \Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

Both utilities gave me an "All Clear" - No help - That's why I didn't precisely post the results.

This IS exactly what happened - and as I said at the time - "I have no Malware." Totally true at the time I stated it.

NOT the Malware but "The Method Of Removal" is the action that left my IE6 search configuration FUBAR.

However Robert was the first and ONLY helper to phrase his reply this way in order for it to make sense to me:

-- RESIDUAL DAMAGE -- An unstressed side effect of the shredders and inoculators.

Thank you RA! (Surely a pseudonym)

and Thank You Sandi for helping me avoid becoming totally despondent in my frustration. (A woman's touch, perhaps...)
