Please help. Everytime I try to access web pages I get
this message: Microsoft Internet Explorer has encounted a
problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience.

What can I do to fix.

I have the same problem, running IE 6.0 with Windows 98.
I am current with Windows upgrades and anti-virus
updates. Charter.net has confirmed my settings are all
correct for cable internet access.

Certain web sites (almost) always produce this error,
including juno.com, msn.com, charter.com and cnn.com.

Most web sites work fine. Is Windows or IE corrupt in
some way?

I am running into the same thing. Downloaded IE 6.0 SP 1
and it worked for about 5 minutes before getting the same
type error. Mine said it encountered a problems in
msiesh.dll. I have to use nestscape b/c I cannot load any
pages. The home page automatically loads
res://mshp.dll/index. I ran norton's and nothing out of the
ordinary showed up. Any ideas.....

What can I do to fix.

Open the Internet Options applet in Control Panel
Uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions" on the Advanced tab.
You may also have to set the Home Page to about:blank

Then eliminate any scumware.
See
Dealing with Unwanted Malware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/cwshredder.zip
**Post your HijackThis log to
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or the Spyware forum at
http://forum.aumha.org/ for expert analysis, not here.**
Alternative download pages for Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis and CWShredder
may be found on this page:
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.

So far I've double-checked all my internet options, and
installed and run ad-aware, spybot, WinPatrol, AVG (anti-
virus) and ZoneAlarm (firewall). Also, set up the HOSTS
file, and downloaded sites to put in the IE restricted
zone.

No luck so far - still can't access juno.com etc.

I'll try hijackthis next.

Thanks for the suggestions.

After 20-30 hours spent trying everything to solve my IE
problems, I surrendered.

Donloaded and installed Mozill browser. So far it seems to
be working fine and allows access to all web sites
previously giving me problems.

At least I learned a lot about security issues and found a
lot of support sites online.

I have the same problem. I think it is caused by Flashplayer or Shockwave programs. I removed the Shockwave and the browser worked fine and when i reinstalled Shockwave, I got the error message again. May have something to do with sites that have a certain type of multimedia that run Shockwave. I tried to remove shockwave again, but I did not see it on my remove list in the control panel or an uninstall in the folder. This is a real problem...any help would be much appreciated.

Here is one of their testing/troubleshooting pages:
http://www.macromedia.com/support/flash/ts/documents/test_version.htm

instructions on how to remove it safely
http://www.macromedia.com/support/flash/ts/documents/control_remove.htm

Or:

Create shortcuts in your Links area under Internet Explorer, which will run
a command:

Flash On:

"C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\regsvr32.exe"
"C:\WinNT\System32\Macromed\Flash\swflash.ocx"

Flash Off:

"C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\regsvr32.exe"
"C:\WinNT\System32\Macromed\Flash\swflash.ocx" /u

(these are word wrapped for usenet, you must combine the two lines
back together, separated by a space)

Of course, if you're not running an NT-kernel OS, or if you installed
flash in a different directory you'll have to adjust the paths to
regsvr32.exe and swflash.ocx
