For the last few days I've been receiving notification of the update and
that the download has been completed, and that the download is being
installed. At the same time I get a message that to install the download I
have to click the "next" button; however, I can't see the "next" button
because it's covered by the first notification. And I clicked where the
"next" button should be, but the installation is stalled.

I tried going to the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon but it says that there are
no new updates.

How about pressing the Enter key. This is usually mapped to the default
button on most dialog boxes.

Well, I called up the Task Manager and ended the application. When I get it
again (tomorrow, no doubt), I'll try the Enter key.

How does one access the microsoft.private hierarchy from Outlook Express?

You can try the settings listed on this page but I'm not sure they work
currently/anymore:
