Recurring Update Notice

L

LadyHeyoka

I keep getting an update notification for the XML 4.0 hotfix. I do not have
XML, I have XP SP3. I have tried to download and install the update just to
make it go away, but it won't install - probably because I do not have XML -
and within minutes, I get another update notification. This has been
happening for about a week. I still have the update icon in my system tray!
How do I cancel this notification?

Click on the yellow update shield to bring it up on screen.
Click on custom install, not express.
Untick the update.
Attempt to close.
A window should pop up asking you if you want to be remined about that
update later, or not.
Take it from there.

You may not have MSXML but the computer does, especially if printer
software is installed -

Security updates for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 may

Boot to Safe Mode:

Follow the steps in KB941729 in order to rename msxml4.dll.
Restart the system to normal Windows mode.

When you are prompted to reinstall the update that was downloaded via
Automatic Updates, Cancel, and Hide it.
Now install the manually downloaded update, msxml4-KB954430-enu.exe.
Restart the system.

If that does not get it installed properly, then contact MS for
