Can anyone assist me with getting my microphone to work,
Ive just bought a new one thinking it could be the
microphone that was faulty, but its not that, am new user
of windows xp?

Louise, each piece of hardware needs software in order to run correctly. It
is possible that XP does not have the best driver for your microphone. Did
the microphone come with a CD? You may want to go to the website of your
microphone manufacturer and see if they have a driver available for your
microphone. You can download it if they do.
Also, be sure to read your mic manual carefully and follow its
troubleshooting buide.

You should have a volume control (loudspeaker) icon next the clock in
the taskbar, bottom right. If not, go to Control Panel - Sounds and
audio, check the box for 'place volume control in taskbar', and click
Apply.

Double click that icon, to bring up the mixer. Take Options -
Properties, and click the Recording circle to select it. Make sure
Microphone is checked below, and OK. Now make sure that the Select box
under Microphone is checked - by default it probably is not. And that
the volume control slider is say half way up. Same again on the
Playback page, if you want to hear the mic over speakers, this time the
corresponding box is 'mute' and should *not* be checked
