Microphone works but no recording meter movement

Yesterday I formatted, mMy microphone works, my voice
comes out of the speakers when I speak into it, however
when I do the "hardware test" in "sounds and audio
devices" the recording meter shows no movement. Also
the "advanced" tab under "voice recording" is grayed out.
Do you know what is wrong? I formatted and installed
everything just like usual...
please help

OK fixed this already.
The problem was most probably in irq address allocation
in the BIOS (although Windows didn't report any address
conflicts) so if you have the same thing, check your BIOS.
